About the Drupal Module Development Boot Camp

This free program is designed to improve the Drupal skills of beginner- to intermediate-level Drupal and PHP developers. Together as a group, we're diving into Drupal's APIs and helper functions, developing custom modules (many of us for the first time), using version control and other Drupal developer best practices, and advancing our Drupal skills to the next level.

Drupal book This is an ambitious program that's for the Drupal community, by the Drupal community, and we want to be sure to get it right, so be sure to let us know how we're doing and contact modbootcamp [at] droplabs [dot] net or call 855-376-7522 (855-DROPLABS).

For courseware, we're using the book, Drupal 7 Module Development, as well as Build a Module.com videos and other materials, including code from the Examples project and curriculum from supporting Drupal training companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is this program?
The first boot camp session is on Monday, July 22, 2013, and continues on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month (between 7-9pm) through Monday, November 25, 2013. Optional lab hours will be held at Droplabs prior to each Monday session from 6-7pm, as well as for a few hours on Saturday afternoons.

When will I hear if my application has been accepted or not?
We closed application process at 12:00am on July 17, 2013. Everyone who applies will be notified via email about whether they have been accepted or not.

What qualifications do I need to participate?
You must have the following:

  • A burning desire to be a kick-ass Drupal Developer;
  • Be committed to work at least 6 hours a week for 20 weeks (this includes evenings on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at Droplabs);
  • Working skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP;
  • Have a Drupal installation ready (remote or local) in order to do the coursework;
  • A copy of the book (see below);
  • Complete and submit the application.

We will not be teaching PHP to absolute beginners in this class. If you know a different programming language beside PHP, you might be able to participate (if your application is accepted) but you will be on your own to do the extra work. Be prepared for at least 6 extra hours a week for several weeks at the beginning of — or before — the bootcamp.

To get up to speed on your PHP basics, check out the PHP Programming Basics series at Build a Module.com, see the W3School's PHP tutorial or go through PHP.net's PHP manual and What's Next? tutorial.

Do I need a copy of the book?
Yes, each trainee will need their own copy. Just note in your application if you need a copy. A supporting training company has already purchased a number of printed copies and ebooks (ePub, mobi and PDF) that can be purchased at cost prior to our official kickoff. Printed copies are $45 and ebooks are $27.

Wait, did you say this is free?
Just like the Drupal job fairs at Droplabs, this program is free for developers to attend. This is in large part thanks to the help of our supporting sponsors.

Do you want to become a sponsor, or send us a developer who needs to be trained? Contact modbootcamp [at] droplabs [dot] net or call 855-376-7522 (855-DROPLABS) for details. Each trainee will need to apply individually and their application will be judged equally with the others that we receive.

What happens if I fall behind?
Each trainee will be responsible for keeping up with the rest of the group. Everyone will be encouraged to study at home or the office, at Droplabs, and so on.

Droplabs is available for optional lab hours prior to each Monday session as well as on Saturday afternoons. Throughout the program, we will be gathered on IRC in #drupal-modbootcamp

We're in this together and will be assisting one another each step of the way.

Do I need a Build a Module.com membership?
No, but that may be helpful. If you wish you may certainly purchase a membership. Use coupon code DROPLABS to receive a discount.

How do I increase my chances of being accepted?
This is an application-based program an not everyone who applies will be accepted. You do have a higher chance of being accepted, however, if:

  1. You've been a mentor or coach at a mentored Drupal training, such as the ones at Drupal Design Camp LA, DrupalCamp LA or at Droplabs;
  2. You have a colleague at your company or organization who can commit to being a mentor or coach for you or another trainee;
  3. You apply together with one or more colleagues from the same company or organization (you must each fill out separate applications).

Who are the boot camp instructors?
This program is being led by Ron Golan (rgon) of Urban Insight, Stewart Pringle (Stew-bee) of Koss, and Christefano Reyes (christefano) of Exaltation of Larks.
