Founded in Spring, 2011, Droplabs is a community-run classroom, coworking space and makerspace near Downtown Los Angeles.
The idea of what eventually became Droplabs was introduced by Lee Vodra during the opening announcements at DrupalCamp LA 2010 (a conference dedicated to Drupal, an open source web development framework) and quickly evolved during discussions at the conference and at Drupal Design Camp LA 2011 (a conference dedicated to Drupal and with a focus on frontend website development and design).
From the very beginning (including the first public discussion in October, 2010, and the original site visit in January, 2011), Droplabs was established on the premise that it's a community-oriented organization. Droplabs is community-run, uses consensus-based decision making, and has monthly planning meetings that are open to all members.
In 2013, after nearly two years of operation, we officially "launched" and ended our open beta. Membership levels were announced and Droplabs shifted from being the only freemium coworking space around to being the leading low-cost coworking space in the Greater Los Angeles Area.
We also opened the doors to the larger web, tech and startup communities and began offering free meetup space for open source meetups and groups. Of course, Droplabs continues to serve the local Drupal community by hosting many Drupal events each month, including the Downtown Drupal, Frontend Drupal and High Performance Drupal meetups, and other events like Drupal Coworking Fridays and low- to no-cost workshops and mentoring sessions.
Operations & Management Group (OMG)
In January, 2013, Droplabs members and founders moved to create an Operations & Management Group (OMG), a committee whose members' roles and responsibilities are to help with the daily operations of the space, such as providing guidance and oversight, suggesting new business strategies and implementing new business policies.
At the time of this writing, our OMG members include:
- Ron Golan
- Lee Vodra
- Christefano Reyes
- Joe Del Rivo
- Sam Tobia
Droplabs was founded by 7 entrepreneurs representing themselves and half a dozen different companies and organizations.
