Droplabs, Coworking, and a Barn Raising at GLADCamp, the Greater Los Angeles Drupal Camp

  • Posted on: 19 February 2014
  • By: Christefano Reyes

Hot on the heels of exhibiting (and presenting on how we built Droplabs) at this week's SCALE 12x conference, we'll be at GLADCamp, the Greater Los Angeles Drupal Camp, March 7, 9, 2014.

We've been brought on board as one of the media sponsors of the conference and are joining Drupal Watchdog and Pasadena Media at that sponsorship level. Come over to our booth and learn more about coworking, our awesome programs and services, and to find out why Droplabs was recognized last year as the Top Drupal Location in the world. You can also sign up for a chance to win one of our 1-month coworking passes!

One of the big events our group is organizing at GLADCamp is the community barn raising to benefit a local 501c3 non-profit on March 9, 2014. Lee Vodra and Christefano Reyes, two of the Droplabs founders, will be presenting on Coders with a Cause and how we run our barn raisings to harness the good will and technical skills of our amazing community to build websites for non-profits in intense one- or two-day sprints.

If you're reading this and represent a coworking space, send us some brochures or coworking vouchers for your space and we'll spread the word to everyone at the conference. Droplabs believes strongly in the values of coworking and offering services to small businesses, freelancers and remote workers, and the fascinating things that can happen when combining these values with the values of open source software and community.

See you there!

POSTPONED: Drupal Employers Summit

  • Posted on: 30 July 2013
  • By: Christefano Reyes

This event has been postponed due to lack of signups from those who qualify. We apologize for the inconvenience to those who have already RSVPd. Stay tuned to Meetup.com or @Droplabs on Twitter for news of when we reschedule this important event.

Do you own or help manage a company or organization that uses Drupal? Does your team depend on professional Drupal service providers in the Greater Los Angeles Area? Have you and your projects been affected by a shortage of Drupal development and theming talent?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then consider coming to our second Drupal Employers Summit from 7-9pm on Friday, August 16, 2013. There is no charge for this event. It is open to any and all companies and organizations who qualify, by following either or both of the following criteria:

  1. Hosting any Drupal meetups, trainings or other Drupal community events, including Downtown Drupal, High Performance Drupal, Frontend Drupal, LA Drupal, and so on;
  2. Sponsoring or exhibiting at any of the Los Angeles Drupal job fairs in June, 2011, November, 2011, and January, 2013.

Hosting a meetup at your office qualifies you for this event. Buying pizza at a meetup, while appreciated, does not. If you do not meet the above qualifications, contact us at http://droplabs.net/contact with a request to attend.

This is a roll-up-your-sleeves working meeting and we will be meeting one another (some for the first time) and discussing the following topics:

  • A quick review of the Drupal Employers Summit we had on January 28, 2013;
  • Catching up on recent events, such as Droplabs' module development boot camp;
  • Building a healthy marketplace and business community of colleagues and potential partners;
  • Getting the most out of our recruiting and marketing dollar;
  • What we're doing now to staff up, from local recruiting and in-house training to outsourcing and hiring out-of-town or overseas;
  • Identifying the skills, job titles and qualifications of desirable candidates, employees and vendors;
  • Workshops, trainings and other programs that most or all of us can get behind in order to solve our business needs.

We'll have an open bar and cocktails will be served.

Droplabs Recognized as World's Top Drupal Location

  • Posted on: 13 July 2013
  • By: Christefano Reyes

Find Drupal events with ease This week Droplabs was recognized by Drupical as the top Drupal location for Drupal events around the world over the past 12 months. Thanks, Drupical! This level of activity has been made possible entirely by our community of event organizers, attendees and supporting sponsors.

Drupical is an awesome event listing service that aggregates and visualizes Drupal events around the world in a handy, attractive web app. It's especially useful while traveling and it's what we recommend to participating members of the California Drupal Travelers Program.

The next time you come to Droplabs, be sure to check out our "take a card, leave a card" table and pick up a few Drupical pins.

We Need Your Help!

In addition to all the Drupal meetups, job fairs and workshops that Droplabs hosts, we're offering a free, application-based Drupal Module Development Boot Camp program that begins July 22, 2013. This series of 10 sessions is designed to level up the skills of Drupal and PHP developers and train them with what they need to become more experienced (and marketable!) backend Drupal developers, and valuable contributors to the Drupal project itself by teaching our community's contribution process and toolchain (Git, issue queues, etc.).

We need help from sponsors to cover our training, food and venue rental costs. Contact Us to learn more about our sponsorship opportunities and sponsor perks, including entrance to our next Drupal job fair.

If your company is in the Los Angeles area and you can send an instructor to lead a few boot camp sessions, we'd like to talk with you about in-kind sponsorship. This will greatly reduce our training costs and make this program an even bigger success.

Droplabs, Present & Future

Our mission here at Droplabs has included Drupal coworking, mentoring and training services from the very beginning. While we've since expanded our mission to support other user groups and open source communities, we continue to offer low- to no-cost access to Drupal mentoring and training resources, free coworking days, office services and structured mentoring sessions with expert Drupal developers and business advisors.

We've been having a lot of fun with the synergy that happens when combining coworking values and open source values. To that end, we're exploring a "store-in-store" business model and are in talks with a number of businesses and organizations to open new Droplabs locations across the Los Angeles area. Stay tuned for a series of announcements about additional locations where we'll be offering more Droplabs coworking, training and mentoring services. And, of course, more Drupal meetups and workshops.

Drupal Module Development Boot Camp

  • Posted on: 8 July 2013
  • By: Christefano Reyes

We're offering a free, application-based program designed to improve the Drupal skills of beginner- to intermediate-level Drupal and PHP developers. Together as a group, we're going to be diving into Drupal's APIs and helper functions, developing custom modules (many of us for the first time), using version control and other Drupal developer best practices, and advancing our Drupal skills to the next level.

Our program kicks off at Droplabs in Downtown Los Angeles, California, on Monday, July 22, 2013. It will be held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month (between 7-9pm) through Monday, November 25, 2013. Optional lab hours will be held at Droplabs prior to each Monday session from 6-7pm, as well as for a few hours on Saturday afternoons.

Drupal book For courseware, we're using the book, Drupal 7 Module Development, as well as Build a Module.com videos and other materials, including code from the Examples project and curriculum from supporting Drupal training companies.

Sound interesting? See http://droplabs.net/modbootcamp for all the information we could think of, including a FAQ and the link to the boot camp application form.

This is an ambitious program that's for the Drupal community, by the Drupal community, and we want to be sure to get it right, so be sure to tell us as much as you can when applying, including feedback in the "Feedback" section. Space is limited and applications that are light on details are less likely to be accepted.

Drupal Sprint Weekend

  • Posted on: 2 March 2013
  • By: Christefano Reyes

Droplabs is happy to host Drupal Sprint Weekend: Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 & 10, 2013. On Saturday, coffee and pastries are being sponsored by Exaltation of Larks. Lunch will be provided by Princess Cruises.

This event is taking place simultaneously across the globe. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/277768 for a list of other Drupal Sprint Weekend themes and locations around the world.

Those interested in attending this meetup remotely are welcome to join us via a Google+ Hangout.

What's a "code sprint"?

Code sprints are organized events where attendees meet online or in person (and sometimes both) and work toward a shared goal.

Local area organizers have produced several code sprints in recent history, including sprints focused on building the SCALE conference website, resolving issues in the Drupal 7 issue queue and updating the Conference Organizing Distribution (COD) project to Drupal 7.

See https://drupal.org/node/247982 for more information.

What's this code sprint about?

Good question! There will be 4 separate themes at this event:

  • The Droplabs Operations Management Group (OMG) is hosting a code sprint for advancing Otto, a Drupal-based coworking space management system, towards its first public release;
  • Jen Lampton, who ran the Twig code sprint at Drupal Design Camp LA (the last code sprint before Twig was committed to Drupal core!), has asked Droplabs to be a remote location for Twig Sprint. Droplabs is providing a venue and resources for anyone who's interested in participating;
  • Members of the Greater Los Angeles Area Drupal Camp (GLADCamp) organizing team will be working on the GLADCamp website and adding content about the conference, including sponsorship levels, hotel information, and local attractions;
  • Droplabs will also provide a FREE mentored Drupal training using Build a Module videos. Just bring your laptop and a pair of headphones. A Droplabs staff member will set up you with a day pass.

We're following up on Sunday with a virtual sprint. Below is the IRC channel and Google+ Hangout information:
