Our Mobile Device Lab program has been a quiet success here at Droplabs, and we're finally ready to take the show on the road with our first Mobile Device Lab meetup of 2014!

This time we're partnering with our friends at the Intel Experience Store and are meeting at 5pm on January 9th at their location at 1421 Abbot Kinney Blvd., in Venice, California. Attendees will have free access to a range of devices with Intel Inside® for their mobile app and mobile website development and testing.

About Mobile Device Lab

Are you a developer or designer of a mobile website or native app, but don't have access to the tablets, smartphones and other devices you need for cross-device and cross-platform testing and development? Now you do.

This program, developed at Droplabs in Downtown Los Angeles, is designed to accommodate the needs of freelancers, independent contractors, remote workers and and indie developers. All equipment is available to use free of charge.

Downtown Drupal Meetup + Droplabs Holiday Party + Food Drive for the LA Food Bank!

We're scheduling an extra special Downtown Drupal meetup this Monday, December 16, 2013, and you're invited! This time we're combining a brief Drupal meetup with presentations and raffle prizes with our annual holiday party and food drive.

As we did at our award-winning holiday parties in 2011 and 2012, we're organizing a food drive for the LA Food Bank. Our goal is to beat our combined proceeds from 2011 and 2012 and raise at least $1090! See https://droplabs.net/node/382#food-drive for details.

This event is being hosted by Droplabs (@Droplabs), a, a Drupal-friendly coworking space, classroom and makerspace in Downtown Los Angeles. We're the leading low-cost coworking space in the Greater Los Angeles Area and have shared and private workspaces that are uniquely designed for entrepreneurs, freelancers and remote workers.

Drupal Meetup

Our meetup begins at 7pm and follows a basic format with Drupal news and announcements, local job announcements, raffle prizes and full-length presentations. As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks.

For any changes to our agenda for the evening, stay tuned to this meetup announcement or click the "Sign up" button at https://groups.drupal.org/node/387878#signup (or both!) to be notified when the agenda has been updated.

Holiday Party

Even if you can't make it to the meetup, you're welcome to join us at 8pm after all the raffle prizes, job announcements and presentations for our annual holiday party. We'll be mingling and networking for most of the evening, and the party is potluck-style so bring something to share that you like to eat or drink.

Post a comment at https://groups.drupal.org/node/387878#comments to let others know what you're thinking of bringing.

Food Drive for the LA Food Bank

We're organizing another food drive for the LA Food Bank, a 501c3 non-profit which distributes food to over 640 charitable agencies including Midnight Mission and the Boys & Girls Club. Here are some good ideas of what to bring:

On Sunday October 13, 2013, the Droplabs family is heading down to Alpine Village in Torrance to celebrate Oktoberfest 2013!

We will be meeting at Droplabs at 12:30 pm and leaving promptly at 1:00 pm. You may also make your own way to the event and join us there.

Sundays are family days with kiddie jumpers, sweet treats and games, so bring the kids.

Our Droptoberfest festivities will end at approximately 6:00 pm, or when the last one of us leaves, whichever happens first.

For our October meeting we are going to take a look at the recently launched KaleCart.com website, a custom Drupal based e-commerce website of an organic grocery delivery service start-up in Downtown Los Angeles.

The KaleCart.com website features:

  • Mobile-friendly HTML 5 responsive theme and fluid product catalog
  • Delivery scheduling widget
  • Product catalog filtering for dietary designations
  • Instagram image feed block
  • Flexible coupon system
  • Credit card payment gateway
  • Automatic product image processing

When we are done taking a look at KaleCart.com we can brainstorm potential topics of interest for future Meetups and open the floor to questions to see if we can help each other with specific challenges we are having starting or operating our own e-commerce projects.

Following the presentation at Droplabs we will be heading over to a restaurant at nearby Chinatown for lunch and networking.

POSTPONED: Drupal Employers Summit

This event has been postponed due to lack of signups from those who qualify. We apologize for the inconvenience to those who have already RSVPd. Stay tuned to Meetup.com or @Droplabs on Twitter for news of when we reschedule this important event.

Do you own or help manage a company or organization that uses Drupal? Does your team depend on professional Drupal service providers in the Greater Los Angeles Area? Have you and your projects been affected by a shortage of Drupal development and theming talent?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then consider coming to our second Drupal Employers Summit from 7-9pm on Friday, August 16, 2013. There is no charge for this event. It is open to any and all companies and organizations who qualify, by following either or both of the following criteria:

  1. Hosting any Drupal meetups, trainings or other Drupal community events, including Downtown Drupal, High Performance Drupal, Frontend Drupal, LA Drupal, and so on;
  2. Sponsoring or exhibiting at any of the Los Angeles Drupal job fairs in June, 2011, November, 2011, and January, 2013.

Hosting a meetup at your office qualifies you for this event. Buying pizza at a meetup, while appreciated, does not. If you do not meet the above qualifications, contact us at http://droplabs.net/contact with a request to attend.

This is a roll-up-your-sleeves working meeting and we will be meeting one another (some for the first time) and discussing the following topics:

  • A quick review of the Drupal Employers Summit we had on January 28, 2013;
  • Catching up on recent events, such as Droplabs' module development boot camp;
  • Building a healthy marketplace and business community of colleagues and potential partners;
  • Getting the most out of our recruiting and marketing dollar;
  • What we're doing now to staff up, from local recruiting and in-house training to outsourcing and hiring out-of-town or overseas;
  • Identifying the skills, job titles and qualifications of desirable candidates, employees and vendors;
  • Workshops, trainings and other programs that most or all of us can get behind in order to solve our business needs.

We'll have an open bar and cocktails will be served.

Force.com Hackathon

Force.com Hackathon at Droplabs

Hey, Force.com Hackers... This is it! Time to dig into your backlogged issues, developer sandboxes, and/or sketches on legal pads for all those hair-brained schemes (or schemas) of yours and git 'er done!

We will be hosting a hackathon this Saturday, June 8th from 11am to 3pm at Droploabs near Downtown LA. We will have on-hand a developer evangelist with whom I'll put together a Level I and Level II challenge/mini-hack for those of you who haven't conjured up your own ingenious ideas yet.

This is a weekend, which should allow more driving time to the event. Since we only have a 4-hour window, please try to show up on-time and with a not-too-ravenous appetite so that we can consume mass quantities of hacking!

Cheers, Nathan Pepper

RSVPs for this event are being handled on Meetup.com at http://www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Force-com-Developer-Group/events/11988...
