Droplabs Partners with Microsoft BizSpark

Microsoft BizSpark We're excited to announce our partnership with Microsoft BizSpark, a program that provides support to software entrepreneurs.

For a limited time, startups at Droplabs can sign up and receive the Ultimate MSDN subscription (worth up to $13,000 in software licenses) and $150 / month of Azure. Rumor has it that the BizSparks benefits may change in July, 2014, so we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible.

To qualify as a startup, you must be:

  • Actively engaged in development of a software-based product or service that will form a core piece of its current or intended business
  • Privately held and in business for less than 5 years, and
  • Bringing in less than US$1 million in annual revenue

This program is not for consultants or agencies. For any questions about eligibility, see Microsoft's Support & FAQs.

Inside the MSDN subscription is Azure, Visual Studio and more, all of which can be used by startups and entrepreneurs at Droplabs who are developing apps (either web or mobile). If you haven't considered Azure for your startup, see the Microsoft Azure page on Wikipedia for a quick overview.

To get started, log in to your Droplabs.net account (or create an account if you haven't already) and select "Microsoft BizSpark Program" on our Contact webform. Telling us about your startup is optional and be sure you have a Microsoft ID (outlook.com, hotmail.com, etc.). A Microsoft representative will follow up with you with a personalized link so that you can sign up without the usual waiting period.

This is the second time Microsoft has sponsored Droplabs. In November, 2011, Microsoft sponsored our Drupal Job Fair and introduced our developer community to their WebMatrix development tools.

Thanks, Microsoft! We're grateful for your support.

Droplabs, Coworking, and a Barn Raising at GLADCamp, the Greater Los Angeles Drupal Camp

Hot on the heels of exhibiting (and presenting on how we built Droplabs) at this week's SCALE 12x conference, we'll be at GLADCamp, the Greater Los Angeles Drupal Camp, March 7, 9, 2014.

We've been brought on board as one of the media sponsors of the conference and are joining Drupal Watchdog and Pasadena Media at that sponsorship level. Come over to our booth and learn more about coworking, our awesome programs and services, and to find out why Droplabs was recognized last year as the Top Drupal Location in the world. You can also sign up for a chance to win one of our 1-month coworking passes!

One of the big events our group is organizing at GLADCamp is the community barn raising to benefit a local 501c3 non-profit on March 9, 2014. Lee Vodra and Christefano Reyes, two of the Droplabs founders, will be presenting on Coders with a Cause and how we run our barn raisings to harness the good will and technical skills of our amazing community to build websites for non-profits in intense one- or two-day sprints.

If you're reading this and represent a coworking space, send us some brochures or coworking vouchers for your space and we'll spread the word to everyone at the conference. Droplabs believes strongly in the values of coworking and offering services to small businesses, freelancers and remote workers, and the fascinating things that can happen when combining these values with the values of open source software and community.

See you there!

We are pleased to announce that OneDayCareer.org is one of the 20 projects honored with an invitation to the Technology Entrepreneurship Demo Day at Stanford University this year. Droplabs Recognized as World's Top Drupal Location

Find Drupal events with ease This week Droplabs was recognized by Drupical as the top Drupal location for Drupal events around the world over the past 12 months. Thanks, Drupical! This level of activity has been made possible entirely by our community of event organizers, attendees and supporting sponsors.

Drupical is an awesome event listing service that aggregates and visualizes Drupal events around the world in a handy, attractive web app. It's especially useful while traveling and it's what we recommend to participating members of the California Drupal Travelers Program.

The next time you come to Droplabs, be sure to check out our "take a card, leave a card" table and pick up a few Drupical pins.

We Need Your Help!

In addition to all the Drupal meetups, job fairs and workshops that Droplabs hosts, we're offering a free, application-based Drupal Module Development Boot Camp program that begins July 22, 2013. This series of 10 sessions is designed to level up the skills of Drupal and PHP developers and train them with what they need to become more experienced (and marketable!) backend Drupal developers, and valuable contributors to the Drupal project itself by teaching our community's contribution process and toolchain (Git, issue queues, etc.).

We need help from sponsors to cover our training, food and venue rental costs. Contact Us to learn more about our sponsorship opportunities and sponsor perks, including entrance to our next Drupal job fair.

If your company is in the Los Angeles area and you can send an instructor to lead a few boot camp sessions, we'd like to talk with you about in-kind sponsorship. This will greatly reduce our training costs and make this program an even bigger success.

Droplabs, Present & Future

Our mission here at Droplabs has included Drupal coworking, mentoring and training services from the very beginning. While we've since expanded our mission to support other user groups and open source communities, we continue to offer low- to no-cost access to Drupal mentoring and training resources, free coworking days, office services and structured mentoring sessions with expert Drupal developers and business advisors.

We've been having a lot of fun with the synergy that happens when combining coworking values and open source values. To that end, we're exploring a "store-in-store" business model and are in talks with a number of businesses and organizations to open new Droplabs locations across the Los Angeles area. Stay tuned for a series of announcements about additional locations where we'll be offering more Droplabs coworking, training and mentoring services. And, of course, more Drupal meetups and workshops.

Image of Dorkbot Hackerspace Tour Introducing the launch of Dorkbot SoCal's 2013 Hackerspace Tour - your chance to get inside Southern California's most exciting hackerspaces.

Dorkbot SoCal's launch event will be at Droplabs — come on out and bring your friends.

Come between 1-3pm to see presentations about projects built by Droplabs members, including a 3D avatar engine / web service; a classroom / coworking management system, and more!

New to Dorkbot SoCal? Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

Dorkbot is a group of affiliated organizations worldwide that sponsor grassroots meetings of artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors, and anyone else working under the very broad umbrella of electronic art. The dorkbot motto is "people doing strange things with electricity".

The purpose of dorkbot meetings is to nurture a local electronic arts community and to encourage emerging, and established, artists to present new works for informal peer review. While many of the dorkbot groups hold their meetings at universities and students are encouraged to attend, dorkbot meetings are not restricted in any way to the academic community. Dorkbot groups encourage the free exchange of ideas on the electronic arts, and regular attendees of one dorkbot will often visit another when they are travelling, serving as informal ambassadors between groups.
